The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
